HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — A Huntersville doctor is going to have to fight for his career after his arrest on child pornography charges.
41-year-old David Shope was arrested last Thursday after Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Huntersville Police searched his Huntersville home.
“Totally surprised, I don’t know him personally beyond the professional relationship, but to hear that is unbelievable,” said a patient who wished to remain anonymous.
The patient had an appointment at the office and didn’t know what happened to Dr. Shope until he talked to WCNC Wednesday afternoon.
“I was supposed to go there to get a cancer shot and there was some confusion about that and finally my son and I were called up to the front office where they told us that Dr. Shope was no longer with us and you have a selection of other doctors and I chose one,” they said.
Shope had privileges at Novant Hospital Huntersville and Presbyterian, a spokesperson says he was not an employee and released this statement:
“Novant Health takes this matter seriously and will work with medical staff leadership to take all appropriate steps to protect our patients.”
Shope has been charged with two counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and two counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. The bond is $30,000 per charge or $120,000 total.
The North Carolina Medical Board is aware and is investigating the case, but so far no action has been taken against the doctor.
Shope worked out of offices in Huntersville and the university area. WCNC called and was told that he was no longer employed.
